Lamb
I thought my first contribution to this blog should be an introduction and a short history. My name is Chris Lamb. People that have known me for long while call me Lamb. As I get older I notice more people calling me Chris, even an occasional Mr. Lamb. I guess that is because I’m maturing and it’s about time as I just turned 42.
I am celebrating my 18th anniversary at Crimson Cup later this fall. Our Founder and President Greg and I are high school friends. Circumstances allowed me to join him a hand full of months after he started the business. I am amazed at times when I sit back and think about the humble beginnings, the places we have been and the people we have known. Over the years I have played many rolls. I have been an equipment technician handling installs and repairs, manager of operations with purchasing, I’ve had shipping and receiving responsibilities, and Roast Master–which is a title I have yet to let go of even though I have had no roasting responsibilities in a long while. But once long ago I developed blends and roasted every bean we sold. I think that is pretty cool.
Now a days I help people achieve their dream of opening a coffee house. I offer my experience every step of the way starting with location and layout all the way through training and conducting a soft opening. I have been fortunate to have learned from and to be working with Armando on the retail side of the business for a big chunk of his 14 years with The Cup. There is much more to my history here, but in the interest of keeping this sort of short I’ll end it here. Maybe next time I’ll write about something really fun like helping coffee house owners increase their average dollars per transaction… we’ll see, maybe I’ll try to come up with something even better than that.

Janie B.
I am going on my 13th year with Crimson Cup and thought I would share with all of you how my journey began.
I am from Newark, OH aka “Nerk Ahia”, and it has been almost thirteen years since I was the restaurant/bar manager for Cherry Valley Lodge. ( Nice getaway by the way if you are looking for something not too far from the city!) Anyway, if you have ever been in the restaurant business or even dined at your favorite restaurant during lunch, you know the hustle and bustle the wait staff goes through to get you in and out in a timely manner. Well, every Thursday when I would frantically pass the Chef’s office during this crazy time, I would notice this very blonde man visiting the Chef. This guy never seemed to be in a hurry like the rest of us, it seemed he had all the time in the world. More often than not, I would see this stranger kicked back, feet up on the Chef’s desk enjoying the lunch special we were serving that day or with his face buried in a bowl of soup.
One particular Thursday I got up enough nerve to say something. I casually stopped, looked at the stranger all stretched out and said “I do not know who you are or what you do, but I want your job”. Little did I know at the time this person was Greg Ubert, President & Founder of Crimson Cup. To hear Chef tell it, Cherry Valley was Crimson Cup’s first “big” account. They supplied coffee and equipment to the restaurant and all of the banquet facilities. The really cool thing about Greg was, even though he was President of a company in Columbus he would make time to deliver coffee weekly to Newark. Apparently this was the deal maker for Chef. He said he would put his faith into a small company only if the President would make his delivery. Again, this is Chef’s version of the story. But it must have been true because I remember Greg showing up after having ACL surgery hobbling through the kitchen, leg brace and all, still delivering the coffee.
About three years passed and I left Cherry Valley Lodge in search of a company that wasn’t too corporate. Plus I did not want to have to spend every holiday and weekend working double shifts. I wanted to go someplace where I had the freedom to be myself, be creative, and discover new challenges while having fun and allowing time for family and friends. The Chef knew Crimson Cup was a growing company and made a phone call to Greg to set up an interview for me. Chef called back and said Greg would be in touch. A week went by and I had not heard anything from Greg. I made a call to Chef wanting to know what was going on and later that day Greg finally called. And in July 1996 I formed the beginning of a beautiful friendship, I officially became a Cupper!
” You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…. “
~Dr Seuss- Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
Although the Chef at Cherry Valley Lodge has agreed to let another Cupper by the name of Big B deliver his coffee, they are still a customer of Crimson Cup today. But to this day Greg still makes special visits to Newark to see his good buddy Chef.

It's JUNKER!! (That's what they call me at The Cup)
At my desk amidst the notepads, pens, and little green army men lies my calendar. This isn’t just any calendar, this is the coffee house music schedule! When we first started having live music on Friday nights, it was little more than calling a few friends in to play. However, in the last two months it has begun to take on a life of it’s own. Several of the artists who have already played have asked to be regulars to help build their fan base! One such artist is Andi Wolfe of the Irish band Aisling. Andi also leads the Hammer Dulcimer workshops each year at the annual Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio. With all these new artists coming in, we’re about to kickoff our first open mic night on Thursday, May 7th. These will be held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. In addition to open mic night, some musicans have asked to bring their band in to rehearse or to just jam on different nights of the week. WOW! As said before, two months ago I was asking favors of friends and now we have some good momentum going here! I’d have to say that it’s done as well as I’ve hoped and better than I expected.
So, without further ado, here’s who’s playing and what’s happening at Crimson Cup Coffee House this weekend!
On Friday night from 7-9 PM we will feature the music of Chris Traut and Heather Evans. Chris Traut is the Youth Pastor of Vineyard Church of Columbus and has a broad following of people from CCAD and OSU. He recently released his debut self-titled CD. Joining Chris will be Heather Evans. Heather is a singer/songwriter from Columbus, Ohio. Her songs have been featured on the TV shows Laguna Beach and One Tree Hill. She recently released her second solo album titled, “For My Generation.”
