5. Am I required to use your products and equipment?
No, you’re not required to use our products or follow our system.
However, we strongly recommend our 7 Steps to Success program, which includes carefully selected equipment, premium products and comprehensive training. After decades of experience, we’ve refined every element to set you up for success right from the start.

6. Do you provide training?
Absolutely! Training is a core part of our 7 Steps to Success program. We don’t just teach you how to make coffee – we guide you through every step of running a successful coffee shop.
Our training program begins with reading the 7 Steps to Success: a Common-sense Guide to Succeed in Specialty Coffee, our core methodology for operating a coffee business. Then, once you commit to owning a coffee shop, our training process includes the following:
- Pre-opening consulting: Business planning, menu development, hiring, POS setup, inventory management and marketing strategy.
- Five days of hands-on training: Our trainer works with you and your team at your coffee shop, using your equipment.
- Soft opening and Grand Opening support: Onsite assistance to ensure a smooth launch.
- Ongoing training and consulting: Continued education and support via phone, at your shop or at our SCA-certified Innovation Lab in Columbus, Ohio.
7. How long does building a successful coffee shop business take?
The timeline can vary depending on location, zoning requirements, financing, contractors, etc.
On average, most coffee shop projects take 6 to 9 months to complete after receiving local planning approval. While we can’t control these variables, our team will provide guidance and support to help keep your project on track.
8. How much does it cost to open a coffee shop?
Startup costs vary based on your location, format, and build-out requirements, but most independent coffee shops open for between $80,000 and $400,000.
