We can’t think of anyone who better exemplifies coffee and community than the late Jan Morton, co-owner of the Book Cellar & Coffee Attic in Iowa Falls, Iowa. That’s why we created the Jan Morton L.O.V.E. of Community award.

The inaugural award went to Findlay, Ohio’s Coffee Amici and its co-owners, John and Lynne Calvelage and Jayne and Craig Allen. John and Lynn accepted the award on August 13 at our 25th Anniversary celebration.

“It was a rare privilege to honor John, Lynne, Jayne and Craig with this award, which was created to share our love of the independent house community,” said Crimson Cup Founder and President Greg Ubert. “It was inspired by the life and actions of Jan Morton, who gave so much to so many.”

Jan, who recently lost a 20-year battle with breast cancer, is survived by her husband and co-owner, Bob Morton.

As the Coffee Attic website says, “Jan left everyone she met with a smile on their face. She always dreamed of creating a place where friends could come together, and she achieved that dream with The Book Cellar & Coffee Attic.”

Written by Lynn Calvelage, Coffee Amici’s nomination for the award read, in part, “As the years go by, I realize all the people who are my customers and employees that I now call my friends. I go out to dinner with these friends, to community events or out for a cocktail after work. We lean on each other, celebrate and cry together. My friends trust me and I treasure those friendships. In many ways we are closer than family.”

Kudos to Coffee Amici! We are thrilled to have Lynne, John, Jayne and Craig in the Crimson Cup family and look forward to many more years of coffee and community together.
