This May, we’re proud to celebrate 14 independent coffee shops that are doing just that.

From Yellow Springs, Ohio, to Melissa, Texas, these local businesses are marking anniversaries ranging from two to 27 years — each one a powerful story of entrepreneurship, growth and community connection.

Guided by the 7 Steps, Grounded in Community

Each shop has followed a unique path after beginning the journey with our 7 Steps to Success coffee shop startup program. It’s a proven roadmap designed to help independent owners open strong and grow sustainably, with support in everything from writing a coffee shop business plan to training baristas and marketing locally. And so much more.

• Calabria Coffee, New Hartford, New York– 4 years

• George’s Coffee @121, Melissa, Tex. – 4 years

• Court Street Coffee on State, Athens, Ohio – 2 years

• Cpl. Ray’s Coffee, Midland, Tex. – 2 years

Some of these owners operate multiple shops. All of them are proof that with the right tools and a lot of heart, independent coffee shops can thrive in communities big and small.

Keeping the Dream Alive at The Coffee Attic and Book Cellar

One shop with a story that’s especially close to our hearts is The Coffee Attic and Book Cellar in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Initially opened in 2001 by Bob and Jan Morton, the business was purchased in 2016 by longtime employee Kat Bissell and her husband, Pat.

Since then, Kat and Pat have built on the Mortons’ legacy, creating a warm, welcoming space that blends handcrafted coffee with culture, art and community connection.

“We provide a cultural hub where people can come to socialize, appreciate local art, have a bite to eat, enjoy a great cup of coffee and relax,” Kat said.

Their story is more than local — it’s global. They’ve traveled to coffee-growing regions with Crimson Cup, funded scholarships and helped build homes for coffee farmers. Through it all, Kat says the relationships with baristas, customers, and Crimson Cup have been key.

“Crimson Cup has been with us from the beginning,” she said. “We count on the 7 Steps team for advice and guidance, and we’re proud to continue the dream started by the original owners almost a quarter century ago.”
